SFU project honoured for its interior design

The School for Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University has been honoured with a Gold Award from the Interior Designers Institute of British Columbia.

The IDIBC presented their 2010 Awards of Excellence at a gala on September 30, 2011 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The annual event recognizes people and projects that “demonstrate excellence in Interior Design.”

The School for Contemporary Arts, part of the Woodward’s Development revitalization project in downtown Vancouver, was led by CEI and Proscenium Architects in Joint Venture.

The 135,000 sq ft facility brings together many artistic disciplines under one roof, including music, dance, theatre, film and visual arts, with teaching spaces that double as fully equipped performance, exhibition and multi-media venues. The design team worked closely with each artistic discipline to determine space needs and deliver a design that would enhance their ability to teach and create contemporary art.

The interior spaces of the building were designed to be part of the learning and artistic processes, creating new opportunities for spontaneous interaction and cross-pollination among the students and faculty.
