A Living Classroom for Green Building Technology
Okanagan College is offering a new certificate program for Green Building Design and Construction. This 360-hour program blends online instruction with workshops and classes at the Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence in Penticton, which is designed to be one of the world’s greenest buildings.
The Centre of Excellence was designed as a teaching tool based on the idea that there is no better way to teach and encourage sustainable building practices than to feature the facility itself as part of the curriculum. To demonstrate and teach the highest level of current sustainable building practices, the Centre of Exellence was designed to the standards of the Living Building Challenge—the most rigorous sustainability program on the planet.
The Centre of Excellence is gathering worldwide recognition for its green design. Its most recent international honors include the Green Good Design Award from the European Centre for Architecture and the Chicago Anthenaeum. It also received the Canadian Green Building Award from the Canadian Green Building Council, where the jury recognized the building’s integration of sustainability with its ultimate use as a Centre of Excellence in higher education.
“Clearly the education sector has come to grips with sustainability in advance of other building types. It’s a really well-integrated design. The architecture has been well integrated with the environmental performance requirements, and while they set out to be a Centre of Excellence for Sustainability they achieved that without overburdening the design with too much technical stuff.”
