Quarry Park milestone
GEC Architecture of Calgary has submitted the development permit application for Quarry Park Recreation Centre. CEI Architecture is serving as sport architecture specialists on the project. This centrally located community centre is situated near an old City dump and has had several unique design challenges resulting from the associated site conditions, including accommodating especially challenging soils and ecological site measures. The program and resulting concept design were vetted through a number of key user groups and are now being reviewed by the YMCA, who were recently selected to be the facility operator.
The unique demographics of the Quarry Park area includes an office park and emerging urban residential neighbourhood, dictating that accommodation must be made for both family and working adult user groups. Specific accommodation for ‘enhanced memberships’ address the large local business hours population through features like lane swimming, a comprehensive fitness centre and a running track, while the significant family support components include a daycare, library, child-minding, swim instruction and a multipurpose gym.
The application commits the project team to a final design for this facility. We are very proud of the design resolution of this challenging project and the key role CEI Architecture played in its delivery. Quarry Park will be an efficient, multi-purpose, affordable and beautiful building. It will be a highly ecologically sustainable and energy efficient facility currently tracking LEED Gold certification. It will be a community asset as well as a regional architectural icon. It’s now full speed ahead for the next design phases of Quarry Park.
