Cowichan Lake Sports Arena‹ Back
The community's centre.
The original Cowichan Lake Sports Arena opened in 1969, a valuable community resource that hosted a range of hockey and figure skating events, as well as other community gathering needs. Just days before the facility’s 40th anniversary, the District of Cowichan Lake celebrated the grand re-opening of the facility, following an extensive addition and renovation led by HDR | CEI.
The goal of the project was to create a range of new spaces in the arena, using a vibrant contemporary aesthetic that also reflects the history and heritage of the region. The resulting renovation and addition provided a dramatic new entrance to the facility, as well as large multi-purpose rooms that are easily sub-divided, new concession and warm viewing areas, an enlarged administration space and new changerooms for both hockey and curling teams.
HDR | CEI led a two-day design charrette and incorporated input from several public information gathering sessions. The charrette workshop involved community planners, architects, engineers, community stakeholders, facility management, local timber industry experts and representatives from Canada Wood Council.
The design incorporates wood in a prominent way, as both a structural and aesthetic detail. The community was actively involved in planning and securing material contributions, with locallogging companies and distributors contributing much of the material. The District of Cowichan Lake and the design team were honoured with a WOODWorks! BC award.
The new Cowichan Lake Sports Arena is a true reflection of the passions and personality of the region, a gathering place to share in the warmth of the community.
