Hollyburn Country Club Expansion

A private club that feels like home.
Membership has its privileges.

Located in the hills of West Vancouver, Hollyburn Country Club is a prestigious private club that has served its community of members for over 50 years. Over the decades, a series of additions were made to the complex, representing an incremental evolution. In 2008, Hollyburn retained HDR | CEI to update to the facility and add vibrant new space to suit the growing membership.

HDR | CEI conducted an assessment and charrette alongside the club’s Steering Committee and determined that the primary needs were to double the size of the fitness centre, add studio and yoga spaces and a leisure pool, replace the 25-meter lap pool with a new one, among other upgrades. The site context dictated a design intent with several objectives: New spaces had to afford stunning views and exceptional daylight; architecturally, the aesthetic goal of the expansion and improvements was to calm the various expressions of previous building phases.

The design subtly unifies the facility as a contemporary building, while reinforcing the impressive mountainside location and views. Concrete and glass comprise the primary palette, with glulam structure on the second floor evoking refinement and warmth. The end result of the extensive project is a private club with a welcoming feel, a facility that will enable future generations to continue to enjoy exceptional recreational amenities while respecting the stunning natural environment in which they live.
