Lakes District Hospital and Health Centre

True north.

The Lakes District Hospital and Health Centre is a design-build initiative that has provided a new hospital for the northern BC community of Burns Lake, replacing an outdated facility. HDR | CEI worked on the project as part of the pursuit team led by PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc.

The new 16-bed hospital provides acute care and emergency services, diagnostic imaging, a laboratory, and a pharmacy. It also supports a variety of community health programs, including public health, home and community care and rehabilitation, and mental health and addictions services. The design team employed evidence-based design principles to maximize efficient operations, enhance quality of care, and improve safety for patients, staff, and physicians.

The new hospital also includes significant sustainability aspects and has been designed and constructed to achieve LEED Silver certification. The design also emphasizes the use of wood as both a structural and finish material. Not only is the use of wood consistent with the BC Government’s Wood First Act, it is highly appropriate for the project’s northern BC location where forestry is an important economic driver.

Construction of the $55-million facility was completed months ahead of schedule, allowing hospital services to transition into the new space and be open to patients in early February 2015.
