Mica Heli Ski Lodge‹ Back
Living on the edge.
Mica Heli Skiing is a leading backcountry heli ski operator on the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains that attracts an affluent international clientele. The lodge is located in a remote location on the slopes of Mount Dainard above Kinbasket Lake. During the winter it is only accessible by helicopter, and access during summer months requires a combination of four wheel drive and barge.
Mica Heli Skiing required a new luxury lodge to replace one of its original aging ski chalets. CEI Architecture designed the new facility, which was constructed by VVI Construction Ltd. CEI was also responsible for the interior design, which features wood, stone, and leather in a rich, natural colour palate.
The new lodge wraps around the front of the existing chalet. At over 15,000 square feet, the new lodge includes twelve luxury suites, staff accommodation, expanded common areas such as a retreat room and business centre, gourmet kitchen, dining room, lounge, ski shop, and fitness centre.
In addition to the challenges of working in a remote area with no road access, the design required significant strategies to accommodate the mountain weather conditions. Winter brings as much as three meters of snowfall, and winds bring additional snow to the site. Snow and its effect on building access and operations was a key consideration in the design.
