Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex Expansion

Coquitlam’s source for sports.

What better way to make sure a community facility reflects the needs and interests of its users than by making them part of the process? That’s exactly what happened when CEI led the design for the expansion of Coquitlam’s Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex, working with TASK Construction Management. We brought together 17 user groups, staff, steering committees and industry professionals in an extensive design charrette process.

The resulting facility provides a wealth of new recreation amenities to residents, including an NHL-size rink with seating for 400, six ice sheets for curling, three practice sheets, dressing rooms for hockey and skating, and concessions. We also expanded the main ice arena to 1800 seats, and created a new main entryway that serves as a focal gathering place for the facility. The design unifies the older renovated buildings and new additions to create a contemporary community resource that feels brand new.

The project was completed well under budget and many months ahead of schedule, and includes a series of innovative and practical sustainable features. Since opening, it has become the flagship recreation space for Coquitlam residents, a shining reflection of an active community.
