Port Hardy Multiplex

HDR | CEI is working with Unitech Construction Management and the District of Port Hardy on a new swimming pool to replace its aging 1970’s era facility. The project required referendum approval to proceed so a design charrette process was used to deliver the concept design in a highly transparent and inclusive format allowing residents to participate in the design and understand the cost implications of the approved scope. At the conclusion of the concept design phase, the project went before referendum voters and was given a 77% approval.

The project combines lap and leisure aquatics in a format that reflects on the specific uses and needs of the community. It is also a reflection of the realities of a relatively small population for whom swimming programs are important, but do not have a large enough population to support a vigorous competitive swim program.
Three lap lanes share the body of water with lazy river, zero beach entry, and a leisure/programmable area. Change rooms reflect the trend towards maximizing unisex change facilities, but also reflect the specific needs of the community associated with heavy use by school programs and first nations populations that are integral to the Port Hardy region.

Aquatics Features:

  • 3 lane 25m pool combined with lazy river and leisure pool
  • Hot tub
