Richmond City Centre Community Centre

Collaborative Design.

City Centre Community Centre is a vibrant two-storey facility located within a mixed-use development. The LEED Gold community centre offers modern, multi-purpose spaces for a range of community recreation programs and services that are tailored to residents of all ages. HDR | CEI designed the facility, which occupies the lower floors of a base building shell.

HDR | CEI began the programming with an extensive public consultation process to determine residents’ needs. We met with over 50 different stakeholder groups, while an online survey, provided in both English and Chinese on the project website, gathered information from members of the general public not associated with any particular user group. Finally, two public meetings were held: an Open House event, and a three-day design charrette.

The public consultation efforts initiated important changes from the program recommended in the original feasibility study, including adding a fitness centre, removing a black box theatre, and combining areas into a flexible community living room.

Richmond City Centre Community Centre’s programmatic elements include:

– Fitness centre and change rooms
– Community living room
– Community kitchen
– Preschool
– Two music studios
– Arts studio
– Three multipurpose rooms
– Three meeting rooms
– Programmable lobby on the lower floor
– Flexible social space lobby on the upper floor
– Reception/control point and staff offices
