WinSport Canada Athletic and Ice Complex‹ Back
HDR | CEI acted as the arena and sport design specialists for Calgary architects GEC Architecture for the design and working drawings of the WinSport Athletic and Ice Complex located at Canada Olympic Park. HDR | CEI’s focus was on the ice sports and Hockey Canada components of the project. HDR | CEI also worked on the design to develop an overall concept for the arenas complex that has been designed to suit minor hockey, adult hockey, and elite team training.
The complex features four arenas. The three recreation-focused arenas are all “end loaded” allowing for a second-level gathering space with views onto all three sheets. The International Arena is a 2,800-seat spectator facility designed primarily to serve Canada’s national teams as a permanent training rink.
HDR | CEI’s special focus was on the Hockey Canada training facilities that include world class dressing rooms, video classroom and other support spaces. The Hockey Canada suite features two NHL caliber dressing rooms (allowing two teams to be in residence at any given time), a video theatre, doctor’s suite, coaching offices, fitness room, and a stunning Hockey Canada Shrine displaying many of the Gold Medals and other international trophies Canada’s Women’s, Sledge, and Men’s teams have won.
In October 2011, Mark Hentze of HDR | CEI and David Swanson of GEC Architects presented the WinSport Athletic and Ice Complex facility to the IAKS Congress in Koln, Germany. The project was featured in a showcase presentation of Canadian elite sport and training venues that was chaired by Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu of the IOC and President of the International Boxing Association.
