Remembering Brian Storrier

By Mark Hentze

BrianStorrierThis past January saw the passing of a great friend of CEI Architecture and the recreation field in Canada with the loss of Brian Storrier. Brian made many friends at CEI through the various projects we worked on together.

CEI had the opportunity to work with Brian on a number of projects after he left the public realm as a facility operator and recreation professional and became a private consultant. Our first project with Brian was the Gibsons and Area Community Centre. Brian excelled at a challenging role on the project, coordinating objectives of both the Regional District and Town of Gibsons. That was the beginning of a friendship made even stronger by the ferry rides to Langdale where Brian, our team and TASK, the construction manager, would travel together and trade stories over breakfast.

We worked with Brian again in New Westminster, Coquitlam, and recently on a feasibility study for improvements to the Kerry Park Arena on Vancouver Island. From Brian, we learned a lot about the political process and were impressed by his calmness under fire that typically resulted in his recommendations being followed.

Consultant Spotlight: PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP

One of the integral members of CEI’s consulting team for Phase 2 of the Thunder Bay Event Centre Feasibility Study is Ronald Bidulka of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Ron was responsible for both the Assessment of Economic Benefits and the Operational Assessment piece, and was integral to the site selection process. In late December Ron was able to secure a similar role, working again with Conrad and CEI, on the master plan for the existing Crystal Centre in Grande Prairie.

Access caught up with Ron as part of a pre-planning meeting for the Crystal Centre project.

Consultant Spotlight: Water Technology Inc.

CEI Architecture is privileged to work with some of the best consultants around. Our new feature, “Consultant Spotlight” gives us a chance showcase the skills and experience they bring to CEI projects.

Our inaugural segment features Douglass Whiteaker, Principal of Water Technology Inc. of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Doug’s team is currently working with CEI on the nearly completed Edmonds Pool and Community Centre in Burnaby, BC, which is set to open in January, 2013. They are also about to begin work with us and Ron Fougere Architects on the Wedgwood Aquatics Centre in St. John’s Newfoundland.

We caught up with Doug at the end of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games to chat about some of our current aquatics projects.
