St. John’s Wellness Centre concept design report complete

CEI Architecture, teamed with Ron Fougere Architects of St. John’s, Newfoundland, recently completed the Concept Design Report for the new St. John’s Wellness Centre. The project is a collaborative effort by the City of St. John’s, Sports NL, and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The design incorporates elements that respond to the unique requirements of each group.

The City has a number of outdated recreation facilities, all of which were initially designed for some other purpose and renovated to suit recreational program needs. The Wellness Centre is the first building to be planned specifically as a recreation complex and replaces an old aquatic centre and gymnasium. The planning process for the new facility used CEI’s design charrette process, headed by Mark Hentze and Conrad Boychuk. Over a three-day period, stakeholders from the City Administration and Recreation Departments, the Province and Sports NL came together to actively participate in the development of the concept design.

Features of the new Wellness Centre include an aquatic centre with a 25 m lap pool and large leisure pool, a double gymnasium, separate arts/crafts and music room, community meeting rooms, a childminding room, and a fitness studio. Sports NL will benefit from a new track facility on the second floor which includes a banked 200 m running track, 60 m sprint track, and separate pole vault, high jump, and long jump areas.

The province will be able to consolidate a number of organization offices in the new Wellness Centre with over 10,000 sq ft of administration and storage space. Similarly, over 7,500 sq ft of space will bring together all of the offices of the City’s Recreation Department.
